It's Amazing How Much Love & Happiness Dogs Bring Into Our Lives

Updated: Dec 14, 2020

Like the fun fact says, my cousin/brother, Ryan, found Rory and convinced me that I had to have her. First of all, you’re probably wondering what a cousin/brother is. Ryan is biologically my younger cousin, but we’ve always been very close and joke that we’re more like siblings than cousins so he calls me his cousin/sister and I call him my cousin/brother. Second of all, her name is from Gilmore Girls, which is one of my most favorite shows of all time. Many people think she is named after the professional golfer, but she’s actually named after Rory Gilmore. I knew for years that would be the name I would use for my dog whenever I finally got one.

Now back to how Rory became part of the family! I was sitting at work on a Saturday morning when my phone buzzed with a text from Ryan saying that he had an idea and needed me to keep an open mind. He went on to tell me that he was looking online at dogs and found 14 week old brother and sister labradoodles that he wanted us to get together. Ryan had convinced his mom that they needed a second dog in their house and that he needed one at this apartment, so they were going to get both dogs. He then found out he couldn’t bring a dog to his apartment, which brought me into the mix. Ryan knew I had been wanting a dog, so he was convinced that it would be perfect for us to get these dogs together and raise them to have playdates so they could still be with each other regularly. The catch? We had to leave to go pick the dogs up in 5 hours...

It wasn’t hard to convince me, but I was at work and didn't know if I could get done seeing my patients in time to go with him to pick them up. I told Ryan that we could get the dogs together if I could get finish my work on time. The stars aligned and my day was much shorter than I expected, so I was in! Ryan and I hit the road and made our way to an Amish farm to find two of the sweetest, most adorable pups that we couldn’t go home without. We loaded the pups into our car and headed straight to PetSmart to get all of Rory’s necessities since I hadn’t been planning on having a dog 5 hours prior.

Now, 1.5 years later, Rory and her brother, Champ, are both double the size that the farmer said they would be, but Ryan and I just see it as having more dog to love! Ryan and I get Rory and Champ together regularly and we are certain that they remember each other and know they’re brother and sister. They love playing together and at the beginning of every playdate they get so excited that they both can’t get to each other fast enough and end up almost wiping out trying to run to each other. They both look so much alike and even though they have grown up in separate houses, they do so many things the same way and have several similar habits.

I can say with certainty that Rory is the best spur of the moment decision I’ve ever made! She is the sweetest girl with the biggest heart, loves everyone, and is always smiling. She keeps me company, she is the best snuggler, and is always excited when I come home. She has TONS of energy and we are working on staying calm and not jumping with excitement when she sees someone, but she just loves to excitedly say hello to everyone she comes into contact with. I’m officially a crazy dog mom and wouldn’t have it any other way! I could not imagine my life without her and she is without a doubt my best friend!
